Every December, somewhere in Britain, a perfectly pleasant evening is ruined by this question. One person suggests Die Hard. Another person objects, on the grounds that a film about a man removing glass from his feet in a Los Angeles office block is not festive viewing.
The Court notes that the argument survives year after year because both sides are describing something real. The disagreement is not really about the film. It is about what the word "Christmas film" is for.
The setting is not incidental decoration. The party is why everyone is in the building, the skeleton security staff is why the heist works, and the estranged-couple reunion is the emotional spine of the whole thing.
Christmas music is used deliberately, from "Let It Snow" over the closing credits to "Winter Wonderland" earlier on. A film that did not want to be about Christmas would not keep reaching for the soundtrack.
Plenty of accepted Christmas films are barely festive in tone. If a film qualifies because Christmas is essential to its plot and its ending, Die Hard qualifies twice over.
A genre is defined by what a film is trying to do to you. Die Hard is trying to make your pulse race. It is not trying to make you feel sentimental about family, snow or goodwill.
The Christmas elements are set dressing that could be replaced. Move the party to New Year's Eve and the plot barely notices — a true Christmas film collapses without Christmas.
There is also the household test. Nobody puts Die Hard on for the children on Christmas morning, which suggests that even its defenders know what it actually is.
Die Hard was released in July 1988, which its critics enjoy pointing out and which proves rather less than they think — release dates describe marketing, not content.
It was adapted from Roderick Thorp's 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, in which the party is also a Christmas party. The festive setting was inherited, not bolted on for a gag.
Bruce Willis has said publicly that it is not a Christmas movie. The Court respects the witness while noting that authors do not get the final word on what they have made.
